Recent charity karting events at Buckmore Park

Charities have had a tough time raising funds over the last few years as their traditional sources of funding have been squeezed. However, this has not been the case at Buckmore Park as this year’s charity races have raised very substantial sums indeed. It seems that when the adrenaline flows, so does the cash!

Take a look at a few of the fundraising events that have been held so far in 2013…

Buckmore presents £5,000 to the HSF


Bill presents cheque to John Surtees

At the recent Henry Surtees Challenge event, held to raise funds for the Henry Surtees Foundation (HSF) Buckmore boss Bill Sisley was delighted to be able to present to John Surtees OBE a cheque for £5,000. This impressive sum was Buckmore Park’s contribution from the recent 24hr Team Endurance event held to mark the circuit’s 50th Anniversary.

John was delighted and thanked Bill who in turn would like to thank all the drivers and teams that supported the event.

Tonbridge & Malling Council — Mayor’s Charity Appeal

The Mayor of Tonbridge, Howard Rogers, raises his hand to signify the start of a fundraising ninety minute endurance. The event was designed to raise funds for the Mayor’s chosen charities, Tonbridge Contact Centre and the Kenward Trust Kenward Trust.

The event proved to be a great success and raised around £1300 through a raffle, teams bidding for grid position and buying extra laps to move them up the leaderboard. Everyone agreed it had been enormous fun and agreed it would be great to repeat the event in 2014.

Down Syndrome Extra 21 — Six Hour Team Endurance

For many years now the Downsyndrome Extra 21 Charity has held a six hour team endurance at Buckmore Park. This year the grid was full, with 35 teams all keen to buy their way to the top. A blind bid-for-grid auction, the buying and stealing of laps during the race, fines for minor misdemeanours, a donation included in the price of each team entry and a raffle with great prizes all combined to raise a staggering total.

Karting for Heroes — Organised by Hydraquip — 3hr Team Race

Braided hose manufacturer, Hydraquip has sponsored a three-hour team endurance at Buckmore Park for several years. Under the banner Karting for Heroes>, the event has raised thousands for the main charity Help for Heroes.
A combination of sponsored team entries, bid for grid and an auction featuring many unique items, the event succeeds in raising big sums of money. The final total for this year’s event has not yet been finalised but is expected to be in the region of £3,000. The previous total stood at £12,208 so the new rolling total raised is bound to be in the region of £15,000.

Demelza House Hospice — 90 Minute Team Endurance

Demelza House have been providing hospice care for children for the last fifteen years. The organisation, one of Buckmore’s chosen charities, recently held a ninety-minute team endurance for teams of three drivers.

With a profit made on the sale of each team place, funds raised through bidding for grid and buying extra laps, plus a raffle, the charity raised £4,600 in under two hours.

Individual Driver Greg McIlwraith — Solo 6hr Drive for Help for Heroes

It’s not just companies who have chosen Buckmore Park Karting as the vehicle for their fundraising efforts; take Greg McIlwraith of racing team Supergreen Racing as a good example. As his two regular team mates were away, he chose to enter our Six Hour Team Endurance as a solo entry, to try and win, obviously, but also to raise money for Help for Heroes Not only did he manage to keep going for six hours non-stop — losing five pounds in weight in the process — but he actually won the race outright too.

This got a standing ovation from fellow competitors who dug deep into their pockets as well. This solo effort raised a magnificent £400!

Rydon Construction — for CORDA, the heart and stroke charity

Rydon have been hosting an annual charity fundraiser for CORDA, the charity dedicated to the early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and stroke, for many years. In fact, the 2013 team endurance race was the 20th anniversary race. This charity is very special to Rydon as Rydon’s Yvonne Mitchell says...
“21 years ago our colleague Roger Horton arranged our first corporate Go-Karting event at Buckmore Park. Following his tragic death from a heart attack Rydon have held our Annual Corporate Go-Karting event at Buckmore Park in his memory and all proceeds are donated to CORDA (The Coronary Artery Disease Research Association). Money is raised through grid bids and raffle tickets and to date we have raised an amazing total of £60,280!"

For many years the West Kent Free Masons have arranged charity events at Buckmore. This year a 2hr Team Endurance event was held which raised £1,200 for West Kent and local charities.

The Canterbury Festival – Raising funds for a 'Spiegeltent' venue.

The Canterbury Festival is Kent's International Arts Festival, the largest festival of arts and culture in the region, and one of the most important cultural events in the South East.

The Festival attracts an audience of 70,000 people of all ages to over 200 free and ticketed events, drawn from across Kent, London and the South East.

Every year festival fortnight includes a wide range of events, including Music, Theatre & Dance, Comedy, Science, Exhibitions, Walks and Talks.

The festival is currently fundraising to support our new Spiegeltent venue for 2013 and 2014. This exciting venue will host a whole range of events during the two weeks including Comedy, Cabaret, Circus and much more! The 90 minute team kart race was organised to raise funds for this project. Every pound raised was 'matched' and so the event produced an excellent £4036 once matching was added.

Kier Construction – for The Teenage Cancer Trust

For the last few years, regular Buckmore racer Rusty Clarke, who is a director of Kier Construction has arranged a 2 hr team endurance to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teams are encouraged to bid for a pole start, to buy laps for themselves and pay to take laps from other teams. This, plus other innovative ideas, such as Platinum teams and a very successful raffle, all combined this year to raise a sum in the region of £8,000.

Changing Paths -Changing lives for ex-offenders

Changing Paths is a Community Interest Company and Charitable Trust, an initiative that has been set up by the Wates Family through the Wates Giving charity programme. Changing Paths assists offenders and others into sustainable employment within the construction sector and its supply chain.

A 2hr Team Endurance event was arranged to raise funds and awareness. Drivers dug deep into their pockets to buy their way up the order and through bid-for-grid. There was also quite a lot of money raised through a raffle.

Philip Southam (Resource and Development Coordinator for the charity) was delighted with the result and later commented, "with Buckmore Park being so supportive of a Rochester based charity, it is no surprise that it will become a regular event for us."

Pilgrims Hospice – 90 Minute Team Endurance

Pilgrims Hospices hadn't experienced a full-on Buckmore Park experience until this July when they held a 90m Team Endurance event. There hope was that the event would raise 'A couple of thousand' was blown away when the total was revealed as £4,500!

A combination of bid for grid, buying laps, a raffle for a giant LCD TV and an auction of some pretty impressive prizes all added to the 'profit' made on a team entry to provide the impressive total.
